BMG Alpine Ski Test

This BMG Ski test completes the ski aspirancy section (and nearly the whole scheme) and is a milestone in an Aspirants progression. The test is now six days long and was held in Chamonix, France. The first two days were spent completing technical day tours in the Aiguille Rouges where we skied the Aiguille de la Gliere and the Col du Beugeant. We then spent four days on a variation of the 'Tour du Mont Dolent' using winter rooms and bivouac huts and carrying our own food. On day one we skied the Col du Chardonnet (of Haute Route fame), Fenetre du Tour, Col Blanc and the Fenetre de Saleina to the Refuge de Aiguilles Dorees. Day two was spent skiing the classic three cols (col de Planereuses, col de Crete Seche and the col des Essettes) to La Fouly. Days three and four were spent skiing Mont Dolent from the bivouac hut and returning to Chamonix. Mont Dolent has a unique position in the alps with it's summit sharing a border with three countries: France, Switzerland and Italy (we skied in all three). The aspirancy part of the British Mountain Guide scheme is unique and similar to an apprenticeship. By the time you qualify it's probable that you will have completed 100 to 150 days under the supervision of another Guide. During my ski aspirancy I've been lucky enough to be mentored by Twid Turner, Bruce Goodlad, Murray Hamilton, Jim Blyth and Andy Perkins.
