North Faces and 4000m Peaks

Another 6 days worth of alpine images taken whilst working for Martin Moran in the Valais Alps of Switzerland. We based the 1st half of the week out of the Bordierhutte and climbed the Balfrin as a training peak then the Ulrichshorn and Nadelhorn 4327m by its NE ridge.
After rock climbing in the valley as a rest day we then left at 01:30am from Evolene for an ascent of the North Face of the Pigne D'Arolla in a 13 hour round trip. In recent years this north face has been dry and not often in condition but it's in good shape at present and is a great introduction to Alpine North Face climbing. This weekend brings a little more mixed weather then high pressure is set to take hold which will bring many of the Swiss classic ridges into excellent condition.

Jeff Flanagan:

Thats awesome. For some odd reason I was just wondering yesterday if you had tackled any of the Swiss Alps yet (thus the reason I checked on your site today) and lo and behold you happen to have just been in Swiss Alps. How would you compare Chamonix with the Swiss Alps as far as crowds and climbing conditions? Regardless it looked like an adventure to say the least.

Tim Blakemore:

Hi Jeff

Good to hear from you. Generally, Switzerland is way less busy with more settled weather in the Valais Alps (which is where the photos are from) but you should come and see for yourself sometime!

All the best

Tim
