winter climbing in NW Scotland

More images from a great weeks climbing in the North West Highlands of Scotland. Long walk ins, solitude and adventure have been the theme of this week. We've been out on a teaching day on Meall Gorm (probably Scotlands most accessible winter venue) and the atmospheric route: 'the Resurrection' (III). This is in effect an Alpine style face which finishes on the summit of Sgurr Mor (highest peak in the Fannaichs) after 1000' of snow, ice and mixed climbing. Rod and Frederic (who is in training for the Matterhorn) found it 'memorable'.

2 to 3 hour walk ins are the norm here, but the rewards are expotentially highermoving up one of the ice fields in inclement weather. Retreat from this route would be extremely difficultlooking back to the headwall on 'the Resurrection'. This final pitch is often the psychological crux: being runout with a corniced exit (and a long way down).happy on the summit of Sgurr Mor (make sure the head torches are handy though!)descending the corniced edge on Sgurr Morthe line of 'the Resurrection' the face is about 1000'

Hi Tim

I wanted to thank you for a very enjoyable week last week. As a guide you where excellent and your ability to understand people and instruct accordingly is exceptional. I wish you all the luck for your forthcoming assessments and a great time in the Alps if you go on to guide there.

Rod
