Northumbrian & Cleveland police top HCMI review

Two of the North East's police forces are among the top in England and Wales, according to a new review.

Northumbria and Cleveland police were both rated "good" in the three categories se by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary. (HMIC)

The findings are due to be published on a national website which will give an overview of police effectiveness.

Durham and Cumbria police also performed well, both receiving two "good" and one "fair" grade.

HMCI has produced report cards that assess each force in three categorises: local crime and policing; protection from serious harm; and confidence and satisfaction.

The forces were graded from "poor" to "excellent", with one to four points being allocated accordingly.
Northumbria and Cleveland police were among only six of the 43 constabularies to score nine points.

Durham and Cumbria each received eight points.

Northumbria chief constable Mike Craik said: "This success is due to the commitment and dedication of all our officers and staff and the support of our partners and the public."

"However, we are never complacent and are always looking to drive our service forward. That is one of the key reasons for our success."

Sean Prince, Cleveland's chief constable, also welcomed the figures, but stressed that there was still room for improvement.

New source of electrical power-is this the end of the energy crisis?

By Angus

In stark contrast to the common point of view that energy can only be produced though the turning of a turbine, whether it be through wind or upwardly rising steam, a group of scientists at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) have found a previously undiscovered phenomenon that causes powerful waves of energy to shoot through miniscule wires known as Carbon Nanotubes.

In the experiments, the Carbon Nanotubes were coated in a highly reactive fuel, which produces heat during the process of decomposition.
This fuel was then ignited at one end by a high powered laser beam, and the resulting reaction was a fast moving thermal wave travelling at a massive speed along the nanotube.
Heat from the fuel goes into the nanotube, travelling much faster than the fuel itself.
As the heat feeds back into the fuel coating, a thermal wave is created which is guided along the nanotube.
With a temperature of 3,000 Kelvin's, this ring of heat speeds along the tube 10,000 times faster than the normal spread of this chemical reaction. The heating produced by that combustion, it turns out, also pushes electrons along the tube, creating a substantial electrical current.

Could this current be harvested or collected, then fed into the mains?
And is it reliable enough to produce enough energy to quench our ever-growing thirst	for energy?

This field of science is still in its infancy and could be the breakthrough that the human race needs to continue harnessing the electrical energy that exists all around us.

I would like to thank the people at Science Daily.com for their original publication of this information.
And the people at MIT for discovering it.

Billionaire Blunder!

A Mexican Billionaire has topped Microsoft word creator Bill Gates, making him the richest man in the world.

Carlos Slim Helu was declared the richest man in the world when he knocked Bill Gates, the past reigning richest man, off the top spot.
While Carlos has a net profit of $53.5 Billion dollars whereas Bill Gates only has a net profit of $53.0 billion dollars, thus making him second on the top 10 list of the richest men in the world.

Carlos is a self-made billionaire, and he is a Telecom buisnesman who pounced on Mexico's national telephone company in the 1990's. He became world's richest man when his net profit rose up $18.5 billion, and the previous year he made $53.5 billion dollars. Carlos is the richest person for first time after coming in third place last year. His net profit is 500,000 dollars ahead of Bill Gates.

However, it is not all good news for Carlos as he is reciving lots of critisisim. His rising fortune has caused a controversy because his fortune was made in a country where 17% of the population lives in poverty. Telmex, which is 49.1% owned by Carlos and his family, charges the highest usage fees in the world, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
But this critisism is not affecting Carlos as he said "When you live for others' opinions, you are dead. I don't want to live thinking about how I'll be remembered." He also quoted "The stock market goes up ... and down," and noted that his fortune could quickly drop."

There is no predictability in the fall and drop of profits.Carlos could remain the richest man for a while but no one can be 100% sure.Mabe another person will come in to the

The Oscars - Once in a Lifetime

Sunday 7th March was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many of our movie stars of 2009. The 82nd Academy Awards took place in Hollywood and there was definitely a lot of excitement and tension on the red carpet. The main achievement of the night was the award for 'Best Picture' given to the surprised Kathryn Bigelow for her movie The Hurt Locker. She quotes; "This was really, truly, honestly never part of anything we even imagined in our wildest dreams."

Other winners of the night included Sandra Bullock, the actress in leading role in The Blind Side. Also the actor in leading role went to the fantastic Jeff Bridges from his role in Crazy Heart. Up took away the best-animated feature film while Avatar gained the best art direction, the best visual effects and the best cinematography.

As anyone would be, many of the nominees for the various awards were disappointed they didn't gain an award tonight but many of them will come back fighting next year.

Scherzinger and Hamilton - Together Again?

Lewis Hamilton has confirmed that he is back together with Nicole Scherzinger.

Back in January, the formula 1 star and the Pussycat Doll decided to split to concentrate on their careers. The pair did promise to stay friends, but have since found a happy compromise with their work and life balance allowing them to feel happy as a couple again.

Lewis said: "things are good. She's working really hard on her album and on Dancing With The Stars and I can't wait to see how well she does with that and hopefully I can get over and support her."

He added: "she's supporting me with my racing and so we're focusing on our careers and we're doing our best to stay in touch and keep strong."

Although Lewis did say there was "no truth" in the rumours of marriage.

The Mclaren driver, who begins this season's formula 1 campaign at the weekend in Bahrain, confessed he was in the best physical shape of his career, and that his ultra-fit training partner Nicole should receive some of the credit for that.

"We go to the gym together quite often and she goes running with me, she does her own programme and I do mine and it's pretty cool!"

He added, "We try not to compete on many things because she can keep up with pretty much anything!"

Youngsters Arrested For Drink-Driving!

Children as young as 15, are being arrested by police for drink - driving. 281 teenagers under 18 were arrested after failing breath tests in the North East over the last three years.

Shocking revelations uncovered that almost a third of offenders were under 17, meaning they were not legally able to drive on the roads, as well as too young to drink!
A total of 198 17-year-olds, 72 16-year-olds and nine 15-year-olds have been arrested for suspected drink driving offences since 2007.

Most of those under 17 were also charged with other offences including car theft, drug offences and not having a licence.

The data includes 27 females and three 15-year-old girls caught drink driving in County Durham during 2007.

There is also a case of a 13-year-old boy who was breath tested by Northumbria Police last October, but no further action was taken.

Jo Stagg, of the Royal Society for the prevention of Accidents said, "This is really shocking. It shows that it is not just teenagers who are legally allowed to drive, but younger teenagers who are being stopped before they have even been given a licence."
These teenagers are making our roads dangerous but charities are educating them not to drink and drive! Hopefully, this will make a impact in the future!

WAR WON BY HELP FROM HARRIS

This story is in remembrance of Mary Harris who helped Britain win the war.

Mary Harris was born in South Shields. She had an insight of fashion
Her goal was to sell lots of good quality, affordable fashion in the early 1930s.

After starting her own factory she the built up her business and opened three new factories. She employed at least 900 workers.

Mary was a person out of a few who knew that the D-Day was going to happen before the event even started.

Her company was given a contract to supply the D-Day convoys with flags, and pyjamas for those who were casualties.

With her sisters Mary decided to open a back room. At the age of 20 Mary married Lionel Harris. She bought four machines for £75 and set up a small factory with her partner on Westmorland Road, Newcastle. She hired a handful of workers to help her with the business.

Mary became a buyer, designer, and machinist. Lionel was her salesman.

During the start of the business the Team Valley Trading Estate was being built in Gateshead. The couple took over a new factory and hired recruited a new workforce numbering 80. All things were looking bright for the future of Mary Harris.

Then the Second World War started. Lionel was asked to join the RAF. Mary decided to turn the factory from making clothes to making war equipment. She started making haversacks, hospital equipment and other essentials.

Then after the war she turned back to gown making again. The market was souring so she decided to open yet another factory in 1947. In 1960 a factory at Walker was taken over.

The company was doing well and a quilt factory was taken over in Letchworth 1964. They celebrated their silver jubilee by also opening a new factory in South Shields.

Meanwhile extensions were being added to the factory in Gateshead. The company made millions and made a massive share of the textile market, with one of their best customers, Mark and Spencer's.
In 1982 she told the Evening Chronicle, "I believe that on Tyneside we have some of the most skilled hands in the country. I feel my company helped fight the down-trodden image which the North East always seemed to have and which lingers today."

She made predictions that clothes would be well-tailored and classic cut and that pants would be permanent.

She then became ill and was forced to sell her business. She soon died in October 1990.

North East Road-Rage

The snowy and icey weather we have experienced over the last few months has damaged our roads severely. There are many large cracks and worst of all, huge pot holes. Local councils were running out of grit to get rid of the dangerous ice on the road, Cody from Whickham school said "If we ran out of grit there would be a lot of accidents in the winter."
The government must keep providing grit for next year or there could be a disaster for travelling by car. All the local councils are coming together to come up with a solution for all these horrible roads.

Lighting Up the Wall!

The Romans first built the 84 mile long road as a defence to keep out enemies. There will be around 500 illuminated spots from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria. Volunteers from all around the globe are lighting up the famous Wall at 5.30pm on Saturday 13th March.

It is one of a number of events taking place in the North East of England. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to light up the famous wall. Hopefully, this event will bring thousands of pounds for the economy, however the government thinks they won't have enough money to do another event like this.

Local residents are complaining about the event as it will attract too many people. The roads in that area are very narrow and there wouldn't be enough room to support all the vehicles. There will also be much less room for the animals living on the farm area. As it's the farming season, the pollution from the exhaust fumes will damage the crops and harm the environment.

Oscars 2010

The Hurt Locker stole the show taking away 6 awards from the Oscars last Sunday night. Avatar losing out on the best director and best picture. James Cameron won only 3 awards, best visual effects, Cinematography and best art direction.

This is disappointing for one of the most expensive (£1.32bn) and the biggest grossing film ever to be made; not to mention the 12 years it took to make. Bigelow describes this as a moment of a lifetime-she is also the only fifth woman to have received Oscars in Academy Awards.

The Hurt Locker claimed 5 prizes not including the best film award.

Regeneration of Trinity Square.

Future Regeneration of Trinity Square Car Park:

There are plans made by the Gateshead Council, to regenerate the site of the Trinity Square Car Park in central Gateshead.
Having been abandoned for a number of years, the 1960's built Car Park and surrounding Gateshead Market and such high street stores as the now closed down Woolworths are becoming an eyesore, as well as the site for the filming of the hugely popular film 'Get Carter'.
This iconic landmark/eyesore is due to be demolished and replaced with a wide variety of office space, Tesco superstore and public amenities-e.g. Hotels, Restaurants, a new Cinema and modern and up-to-date Health Facilities.
Not to mention New Parking areas.

In recent years, there has been much controversy over the future of the site, and until the intervention of Spenhill (the commercial development subsidiary of Tesco.) the future of the site was uncertain.

There are mixed public opinions on the building of the new 3.5 hectare site, and many people support it, whereas others are rather uncertain:

John-"I would like to suggest that 'Your Trinity Square' be renamed 'Tesco's Trinity Square' to reflect the true weight and influence. It isn't ours at all."

This is the point of view of John who has clearly stated his concerns about the ownership of the entire project by Supermarket Giant Tesco.

The opinions expressed in the quote above, do not necessarily give the opinions of the BBC, Thomas Hepburn or those whom the article concerns.
No copyright laws were infringes to my knowledge, and if they were I and

Sugata Mitra at Gateshead CLC

We are delighted to welcome Professor Sugata Mitra to the CLC on BBC School Report Day. Professor Mitra will be taking part in an education debate to be broadcast live over the web at 14.00 tomorrow.

Prof. Sugata Mitra is currently Professor of Educational Technology at the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences at Newcastle University, UK.

He is also Chief Scientist, Emeritus, at NIIT.

He is the instigator of the Hole in the Wall (HIW) experiment, where in the year 1999 a computer was placed in a kiosk created within a wall in an Indian slum at Kalkaji, Delhi and children were allowed to freely use it. The experiment aimed at proving that kids could be taught computers very easily without any formal training. Sugata termed this as Minimally Invasive Education (MIE). The experiment has since been repeated at many places, HIW has more than 23 kiosks in rural India. In 2004 the experiment was also carried on in Cambodia.

His interests include Children's Education, Remote Presence, Self-organising systems, Cognitive Systems, Physics and Consciousness.

The Hole in the Wall experiment has left a mark on popular culture. Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup read about Mitra's experiment and was inspired to write his debut novel Q and A - this subsequently went on to become the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

Prof. Mitra is a leading proponent of MIE. He is a PHD in Physics and credited with more that 25 inventions in the area of cognitive science and education technology. He was conferred the prestigious Dewang Mehta Award for Innovation in Information Technology in the year 2005.

Students from Thomas Hepburn School interview Flight Lt Will Close-Ash. Will led a group of six local air cadets to save the lives of 2 seriously injured Belgian climbers in the Pyrenees. Will personally led 5 trapped climbers to safety. An amazing story of courage and coolness in the face of danger.
