BBC News Stars!

We had a fantastic BBC School Report Day here at the CLC. Our young reporters from Dyden School, Whickham School, Thomas Hepburn School and Ryton School researched stories based on the theme of Education, past, present and future and then presented live web tv broadcasts streamed over the Internet. The day culminated in a broadcast education debate led by students from Ryton school with a panel of guests which included Professor Sugata Mitra, the Mayor of Gateshead and Cllr Donovan.

The hard work paid off as we had 2 BBC TV crews with us all day. We featured live on the BBC SRD website and we had 2 live reports for the BBC News Channel. BBC Reporter Razia Iqbal also fronted a package shot at the CLC which featured on the BBC News at 6pm and 10pm.

Well done to all of the students and staff who participated! We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Professor Sugata Mitra at Gateshead CLC

We are delighted to welcome Professor Sugata Mitra to the CLC on BBC School Report Day. Professor Mitra will be taking part in an education debate to be broadcast live over the web at 14.00 tomorrow.

Prof. Sugata Mitra is currently Professor of Educational Technology at the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences at Newcastle University, UK.

He is also Chief Scientist, Emeritus, at NIIT.

mitra.jpgHe is the instigator of the Hole in the Wall (HIW) experiment, where in the year 1999 a computer was placed in a kiosk created within a wall in an Indian slum at Kalkaji, Delhi and children were allowed to freely use it. The experiment aimed at proving that kids could be taught computers very easily without any formal training. Sugata termed this as Minimally Invasive Education (MIE). The experiment has since been repeated at many places, HIW has more than 23 kiosks in rural India. In 2004 the experiment was also carried on in Cambodia.

His interests include Children's Education, Remote Presence, Self-organising systems, Cognitive Systems, Physics and Consciousness.

The Hole in the Wall experiment has left a mark on popular culture. Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup read about Mitra's experiment and was inspired to write his debut novel Q and A - this subsequently went on to become the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

Prof. Mitra is a leading proponent of MIE. He is a PHD in Physics and credited with more that 25 inventions in the area of cognitive science and education technology. He was conferred the prestigious Dewang Mehta Award for Innovation in Information Technology in the year 2005.

Gateshead CLC in World Record Attempt

March 11th isn't just BBC School Report Day...

More than 250 schools from the Shetland Islands in the north to Jersey in the south - and as far away as St Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean - will all be taking the temperature on 11 March. Schools here at the CLC on the day will be measuring and sending in the Gateshead temperature.

Each school will take a celcius reading at approximately 0915 and email it in to the BBC Weather Centre, who will compile all the readings for a huge weather report later in the day.

ONLINE SAFETY WEEK

Today is the start of online safety week. This week we want to ensure that our young people make the best of using the Internet in a safe way. We believe the Internet is an amazing place for all people not just young people but young people especially should take care when contacting people via the internet. Communication skills are vital in the 21st Century and computers provide global access to people. Social Networking has really made its mark on our society and provides easy access to groups of like minded people but we must ensure our young people take precautions to safeguard themselves when online. A simple measure is to set privacy settings on their social networking site so that only known people can gain access to their group.
What other things can you do to keep safe online. Use the comments box to share your tips for safety online.

Online Safety Week - February 8-12 2010

Online safety week is the 8th - 12th of February 2010. we take the online safety of our young people very seriously. We have uploaded some useful websites into the Learning Platform.

Wilkinson's Tragedy Remembered

bquay.jpg

Over the past few days we've been running several sessions which have focused on the 1941 air raid disaster at Wilkinsons Lemonade Factory in North Shields.

Using text, archival materials and artifacts the children from Bill Quay and Windy Nook have explored the incident and have used Robert Westall's The Machine Gunners to understand the wider, Tyneside Blitz and Home Front context. The sessions have concluded with the creation of music soundtracks to Blitz footage (using Jam Trax) and comic strips promoting air raid awareness (Comic Life).

We also encouraged the class from Bill Quay to participate in some propaganda!

WOW....POETRY, MAGIC AND UKELELES

Our mini Poetry Festival ended yesterday with storming performances from Paul Cookson and Nick Toczek. Earlier in the week, Nick, Craig Bradley and Gez Walsh set the tone with dynamic sessions and expert workshops, leading the children attending to create their very own space and alien themed poems.

It's been a cracking week and one that we're very likely to repeat in the Summer Term.
We'll be adding podcasts and vodcasts from the Festival over the next week or so. And...we'll be busy creating a 3D Space themed game featuring the children's work and their video footage. More on that later.

Meantime....enjoy this!

Living and Learning with New Media

For the last three years, a team of researchers at Berkeley and USC have focused on digital youth practices. This project, funded by the MacArthur Foundation, brought together 28 different researchers (led by Mimi Ito and the now deceased Peter Lyman) to examine different aspects of youth life. They focused on standard teen practices and the ways in which teens engaged in networked publics. Attached are the findings and a 2 page summary.

e-Safety Ambassador

E-Safety is not only concerned with the Internet but also mobile phones and wireless technology. E-safety is about keeping our young people safe and secure in the Online world. We need to make sure our children and young people know about the benefits but also the risks and responsibilities of using information technology. An e-safety policy provides a framework within which to engage with these technologies.

The Internet is unmanaged, to a large degree and is not closely monitored but it is an excellent way to find things out and learn. The World Wide Web, e-mail, blogs and social networking are all used to pass information through the Internet, this is why it is used by millions of people world wide for all sorts of things. The idea of e-safety is to provide children and young people with the information they need to engage with this technology on a safe secure way.

E-safety Ambassador.
The Child Exploitation and Online Protection service (CEOP) are an organisation set up to educate Children and Young People how to use online technologies safely and securely. They are also part of the world wide Police agency which tracks down and prosecutes people who abuse the system for their own ends.

A CEOP Training Ambassador will have been on an accredited course and will have been given more information about both a law enforcement and education perspective broadening an understanding of this emerging arena.

An e-safety Ambassador is able to deliver training to other professionals in the 11 -16 year old arena using theThinkuknow education resource.

ictGateshead has an accredited e-safety Ambassador available to deliver this course.

Mike Carter is Gateshead's eSafety Ambassador for schools.

soundbeamSoundBeam
SoundBeam is a fun and creative introduction to digital music-making and performance for non-musicians. It is particularly useful for young children.
SoundBeam converts physical movement into sound. Working in groups children will create their own soundscapes through physical movement and expression. These can then be re-purposed for use in PhotoStory, PowerPoint and web presentations or converted to podcasts for broadcast on the school website or CLC web radio.
2/3/4/5/6

guitar Cyclical Rhythms and Sony Acid Pro
The pupils will explore timbre and pitch through the genre of Techno Music. They will create a musical piece by manipulating the pre-programmed techno music template within the software to produce a finished piece of music involving rhythm and pulsating beats throughout.
[Unit 16: Cyclic Patterns - Exploring rhythm and pulse.
Section 1: Introduction: How does some music use cyclic patterns? ]
5 and 6

ground Ground Control to Major Tom
The pupils will document a musical journey into space. They will use Sony Acid Pro and the revolutionary Yamaha Tenori-On to create a musical stimulus for a journey through the planets. This will culminate into a multimedia presentation which the pupils can export as mp3 onto CD.
[Unit 18: Journey into Space - Exploring sound sources]
5 and 6

control Computer Control
Year 5 pupils using Junior Control Insight 2 software will model systems to solve simple problems. The computer simulations of the systems are then enhanced by using the control boxes which enable the children to manipulate the operation of a variety of "real" components, for example, simulating the sequence of lights at a Pelican crossing (1-2 sessions).

Year 6 pupils are invited to design and make a card model of a simple fairground ride, whilst at the same time further developing their skills using Junior Control Insight. In a later session the children bring their fairground models into the CLC and develop their models into working prototypes using the control boxes. This would involve 2-3 sessions in school, 1 in the CLC and a final optional session in school to develop a presentation about the experience.
5 and 6

magic planet Magic Planet
The Magic Planet is a 3D digital globe which allows pupils and teachers to view and explore dynamic earth systems, planetary objects and mathematical concepts. These sessions are linked into the PoS for geography in years 5 and 6.

Year 6 pupils can enjoy working with ProDESKTOP CAD software currently used throughout the Secondary sector. This enables them to generate complex three dimensional objects quite simply. These images are then rendered using the software and printed to make a colourful display. Their "virtual" designs are then manufactured using the rapid prototyping machine at the CLC. Projects include "boat", "robot" and "shelter" designs, (2-3 sessions)

Year 5 and 6 pupils can work with Techsoft-Primary Design CAD software, specially designed for younger children. Easy to use 2-D drawing software allows pupils to develop beautiful coloured images as well as to design simple products which are manufactured from Acrylic at the CLC using the laser cutter. Examples include mobile phone stands, key-ring fobs, phone charms, pen holders...(1-2 sessions)

5 and 6

stone age Electronic Curator - Stone Age to Space Ship
In partnership with The Discovery Museum.
Pupils become museum curators for the morning and are introduced to a range of interesting objects from the Stone Age to the Space Age. Whilst learning about each object pupils are introduced to the work of curators and museums. Pupils are then invited to investigate their favourite objects further by handling/weighing/measuring/describing and photographing the object to create an electronic record card for the item. Finally, can pupils guess what the fiendishly strange Mystery Object is?

Photostory or Word will be used to create e-record cards. Cards are then indexed and displayed on the project/school website.

Welcome back everyone,

Kuzari at Gateshead CLC

We've just had a great Djembe master class at the CLC with Sam Maitland and Zozo Shuaibu from Kuzari. 120 children from St Philip Neri and St Mary and St Thomas Aquinas schools attended the morning and afternoon sessions.

spn.jpg

Sam and Zozo gave each child a mini-drumming lesson, taught basic djembe drum language and then got the children even more active with songs, stories and games.

Look out for further whole-day sessions in November/December with Sam and Zozo.

You can see more photos from the day at the Kuzari website

Rosemary Endacott from Lord Lawson of Beamish School writes...

Year 8 pupils from Lord Lawson school are asking to return to Gateshead City Learning Centre as soon as possible following an enjoyable morning spent learning animation skills. Twenty six pupils worked against the clock to create a two minute animated film which had been prepared during the previous week.

Their enthusiasm was matched by the excellent advice and help they received from Paul Stott and Natalie. By the end of the morning, they were reluctant to leave. When they returned to school their smiles and comments said it all:

'Will we go there next week, Miss?'
'Wow! Wait til I tell my mates what we've done.'
'I really enjoyed that. It was brill.'

As the government tries to raise achievement in schools, particularly amongst boys, it's interesting to note that the majority of this group were boys. Many of whom took on extra homework in order to achieve their goals.

Verdict?
A resounding success!

Young People and Social Networking Services

Childnet International Research have just published the above report. The report was written from a UK schools and Further Education perspective. Pretty much essential reading for all those involved in this arena.

What we do...

primary

Gateshead and Heworth City Learning Centres work together within the LA ICT strategy. CLC and LA teaching and learning, senior management and subject leader sessions are delivered in both centres. Planning, training and developments are discussed and implemented across the CLCs, providing all schools with an holistic approach to ICT support and innovation. This allows CLCs to impact directly on National Strategies and the Building Schools of the Future agenda, by providing an array of choice and additionality in the educational experience. This publication gives a flavour of the type of activity offered by the CLCs. If you have any queries or require additional information please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Gateshead City Learning Centre, in its new riverside location, is involved in extending and creating exciting opportunities for all partners in 2008 and 2009. Our special learning Platform and e-portfolio rollout continues, as does ongoing professional development work with school staff.

Well done Dryden School!

Survived BETT Show

My feet are still aching though after the 2 day march through Olympia. I need to discover an ant-jostle device....a pet wolf should do it.

Still, lots to see including some eye-candy furniture and space design from Isis, Mimio's portable IWB systems, a raft of podcasting "solutions" including Podium, the frankly wow-factor Reactable project from FutureLab and new initiatives from the likes of ESP, creators of ComposeWorld and RhythmMaker.

Nice to see some Library/Archive resources and services being promoted. Top of the heap = 24 Hour Museum, and MICHAEL search of free online resources from museums, libraries and archives.

Check out too the new offering from English Heritage, Heritage Explorer

Welcome Back...

We've rang out the old and rung in the new for 2008 and we're looking forward to working with you all again in the new term. First week back though we'll be at the BETT Show in London checking out what's hot and what's freeeeeeeeeeezing in the world of educational ICT. We'll be asking questions about GIS and handheld learning in particular. If you're going down for the event, let us know and we can meet up for a hideously over-priced cup of coffee....

Derek the Dalek was in jocular mood on Day One of his return to The Office.

In the presence of The Master (Moira) and various alien species (Mike and Trevor), Derek announced his plans to subjugate The Creche by sending them on a Dreamweaver course. The crazed master-criminal behind the kidnapping is believed to be appearing soon in pantomime locally... for which Derek has tickets. (Oh no he hasn't - ed).

Derek is spending the weekend quietly with his friends, The Cult of Skaro. Flowers, chocolates and Fig Rolls can be sent to him c/o Peter at the usual address.

STOP PRESS: Derek to be released....

dalikilovekittens.jpg

An email from the kidnappers (currently being traced) suggests that Derek will be released from captivity later today. The message reveals that Derek has been brainwashed by a sect of tree-hugging neo-hippies intent on turning the planet saffron. Apparently, Derek will now pronounce love and peace and will promote the music of James Blunt and Enya as a global panacea.

On release, Derek will be offered trauma counselling and a refresher course on "Global Domination The Dalek Way".

Derek The Dalek Disappears...

CutOutDalekSec.jpg
Derek the Dalek....cuddly, really,

Sadly, we have to report the kidnapping of Derek, our office Dalek.

A local officer of the Judoon, attending the scene at Unit 6, concluded from the barely literate ransom notes that the snatch was committed by a human, probably a female, driven temporarily insane through stuffing thousands of leaflets into envelopes. She may have been assisted in the crime by disaffected members of The Creche, a sinister organisation of alleged web designers and administration workers.

Derek is thirty three and a third and a much-loved member of a superior species. His hobbies include; seeking, locating and exterminating, the colonisation of other planets, performing emergency temporal shifts and the taunting of envelope stuffers. He is of course much misunderstood and he works endlessly for world domination (surely, you mean peace? - ed)

A reward (virtual) is offered for information leading to the safe return of Derek.

Please contact: The Cult of Skaro, c/o Gateshead City Learning Centre. who will be pleased to scan your brain waves for useful data.

Westalls War - Radio Documentary

We've just added new audio content to the Westall's War website.

Recently, we were approached by a local media student Neil Reynolds, mastering in radio production, who kindly offered us access to a radio documentary he was producing on Robert Westall. Westall was the locally born author of the award-winning The Machine Gunners.

The documentary, Westall's Garmouth is now available on the above site for download as a podcast. It is an excellent piece of work and well worth a listen.

Lego Robotics Competition @ Heworth Grange

On Friday 19th October, teams from four Gateshead Primary schools took part in the grand final of a Lego Robotics Competition at Heworth Grange City Learning Centre. Under their team names “Rampaging Penguins” (Bill Quay), “Dunston Divas” (Dunston Hill), “Roman Bots” (Roman Road) and “The Geordies” (Glynwood), pupils designed programs to control robots through a series of challenging tasks. The competition had a soccer theme and robots had to weave in and out of defenders, beat the defence and score goals.

All teams performed well on the day. When scores were totalled up it was Roman Road school who emerged as winners. Dean, Lauren, Nathan and Caitlin picked up the top prize, a Logo Nxt Robotics kit while runners up were awarded Robosapiens Robots. All pupils received a gigabyte memory pen as a reward for their hard work.

It's looking interesting - especially if the touted Forum module is introduced. More on this later.

Tales from the Watermark #2

Cassette

Well, its the final week before Christmas and a busy time here at the CLC, we've had courses and meetings running all week from a range of clientèle. While the staff here at the centre went from the being the trainer to the trainee, when we were shown how to use our new video camera equipment, complete with chroma key capabilities. This will allow us to use 'blue-screen' technology to place the actor on any image background...

Work also continues on the many school weblogs listed in our blogorama, for both existing schools and new requests for work, which we receive on a weekly basis. We also continue to upgrade, update and install new and exciting packages to make use of around the centre.

Christmas lunch was also well enjoyed by all this week, as will be the staff night out!

ExploreMusic - Podcast #2

pipes

We are delighted to bring you the second of ExploreMusic’s two exposed:pipes podcasts. This particular broadcast gives a flavour of the wide range of activities which happened throughout the two months.

You’ll hear excerpts of the free concourse performances, discussions with pipe maker Colin Ross at his demonstration and with Julia Say from the Northumbrian Pipers Society, plus some questions and answers at the beginner workshops with Anthony Robb.

The podcast draws to a close with a recording of some work by GCSE and A level students from Whitley Bay High School. Sessions, led by composer and animateur Stephen Deazley, looked at the rhythms and melodies in Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ Kettletoft Inn score for pipes and orchestra, and students then created their own pieces based on their observations.

We’ll be bringing you more podcasts of exposed:brass in December, plus some exclusive interviews with artists as part of our exposed: series in January and February which looks at singers and song writing. For more on any of the upcoming exposed: series visit www.gateshead.gov.uk/exploremusic

ExploreMusic Podcast

Pre-concert talk with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Anthony Sargent

exploremusic

ictGateshead are pleased to host ExploreMusic's exposed podcast series.

Here is ExploreMusic's first podcast, available to download for free!

As part of the exposed: series, this is the first instalment of our two
podcasts based around pipes, which was our exposed theme in September and October.

This pre-concert talk was recorded before the premiere of Sir Peter
Maxwell Davies' 'Kettletoft Inn', a new commission written for Northumbrian
Piper Kathryn Tickell and the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra.

Anthony Sargent, General Director of The Sage Gateshead, talks with Maxwell Davies about his life, his development as a composer, his music and this inspirational new piece.

Look out for the second podcast coming very soon, which has music from our packed pipes day and interviews with people who enjoyed it, as well as the piece composed by music students from Whitley Bay High School, based on 'Kettletoft Inn' and performed live by the musicians who composed it.

For more information about the exposed: series, or about Sir Peter Maxwell
Davies, please visit the ExploreMusic website:
www.gateshead.gov.uk/exploremusic and click on exposed: in the main menu.

Hmm...tasty stuff, creepy crawlies...
Take a look and find out more about this yukky job.
The site has Flash based talking head content and a fab "Find the Lice" game.

Tales from the Watermark #1

cassette

It's been a hectic week so far with CLC Units 13 and 6 seeing a steady stream of classes and visitors. We've been out and about too: to Gateshead Carer's Association to look at blogging and community website solutions for their activities, to Oakfield Junior and Wardley Primary schools for staff training (blogs). We're finalising a new school website for Fellside Community Primary School complete with podcasts created by the children. Back at the office we're exploring new chat/messageboard facilities, relocating many of our blog sites to new server spaces and pondering mad schemes like this :-) Further reports from the front-line to follow...meantime, I'm checking out how to do this.

You can find the cassette image generator here.
