Curriculum Management Guide to Literacy
This document is designed to be used as a tool by literacy co-ordinators in order to help them to effectively fulfil their leadership role of the subject. It will support colleagues to give a clear view of standards in the subject and areas for school development.
It has been produced by Gateshead's Primary Literacy Team, mainly in response to the question frequently asked by co-ordinators, 'What should be in my co-ordinator's file?'

Teachers - Get your class creating and pick up great prizes at the same time!
Victorian Voices is a short story competition for 7-11 year olds run by Archive Awareness Campaign this winter.
Your school could win books and Adobe software while Key Stage 2 children (P4-P7 in Scotland and equivalent in Republic of Ireland) can get their hands on bags of Usborne titles and the chance to spend a day with a design expert creating the perfect cover for their story.
From September 2005 you will be able to download a resource pack from www.victorianvoices.com containing 100 Victorian documents - school logbooks, workhouse records, apprentice records, migration registers, maps, photos and much more to help inspire your class to write. We’ll also help you teach the short story writing by giving you lesson plans (for literacy) and hints on using the resources in history, art, environmental studies, ICT and citizenship. There will be details of Victorian events near you, and of course, we’ll tell you how to enter your pupils in Victorian Voices (the closing date for entries will be mid-December).
To register interest in the competition now go to www.victorianvoices.com and we will let you know when the resource pack is ready to download.

National Literacy Strategy - Phonics Training
The Primary Literacy Team will be delivering phonics training at Dryden Centre in June and July, 2005. This will take the form of a one-day course which will be repeated to accommodate the numbers of teachers involved. It is aimed at both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 teachers to ensure that the teaching of phonics is securely embedded in Key Stage 1 and extended and consolidated in Key Stage 2.
There are no course fees and lunch will be provided.
A contribution of £140 per teacher towards supply cover funding will be available from the LEA. This is for either one Year R teacher or one Year 1 teacher AND one Year 3 teacher from each school. (Two teachers from each primary school and one teacher from each infant or junior school).
Training dates have been allocated to schools. PLEASE REFER TO LETTER DATED 11 APRIL 2005 for this information. It is essential that reply slips are completed and returned to enable appropriate catering and accommodation arrangements to be made.
All participants should bring to the training:
· ‘Progression in Phonics’ book;
· ‘Playing with Sounds’ file;
· Year 2 / Year 3 Spelling Exemplification;
· any other materials being used successfully to support the teaching of phonics.
