Winner! - BBC School Report Delivery Partner

We're off dahn sarff next month to the BBC Television Centre to pick up an award as a winning Delivery Partner for the recent BBC School Report Day. We understand that the judges were impressed with the range of opportunities we offered to our participating schools and by our interactive and multimedia project website.

Whilst it's nice to pick up gongs, we're more delighted to know that our participating schools had a great day, picking up new skills and information. We're looking forward to next year.

CLC Web Radio - Sample Content By Schools

We've just added 3 hours of new programming on our web radio station running in rotation Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 8.00pm. It's a sample of what Gateshead schools are doing with us at the CLC in sessions with Iain Knox, Mike Carter and Peter Bolger. Amongst the mix you'll hear:
Songs from St Alban's Catholic School, Everest Diaries by St Joseph's Gateshead, Witches' Spells from Whickham Parochial, ScienceBox from Thomas Hepburn School and some fab French from the children at Windy Nook. You can check out the work of Arena North, a young people's theatre group who visit us on Thursday evenings and listen to a professional documentary about Robert Westall as a companion piece to our westallswar.org website.

We want new reading ideas from you - I need to get away from a crime fiction rut, for sure - so, why not tell us what book you're reading now, or maybe details of your best ever read?

Good suggestions from local folk may result in invitations to attend some forthcoming NYR events.

My feet are still aching though after the 2 day march through Olympia. I need to discover an ant-jostle device....a pet wolf should do it.

Still, lots to see including some eye-candy furniture and space design from Isis, Mimio's portable IWB systems, a raft of podcasting "solutions" including Podium, the frankly wow-factor Reactable project from FutureLab and new initiatives from the likes of ESP, creators of ComposeWorld and RhythmMaker.

Nice to see some Library/Archive resources and services being promoted. Top of the heap = 24 Hour Museum, and MICHAEL search of free online resources from museums, libraries and archives.

In the presence of The Master (Moira) and various alien species (Mike and Trevor), Derek announced his plans to subjugate The Creche by sending them on a Dreamweaver course. The crazed master-criminal behind the kidnapping is believed to be appearing soon in pantomime locally... for which Derek has tickets. (Oh no he hasn't - ed).

An email from the kidnappers (currently being traced) suggests that Derek will be released from captivity later today. The message reveals that Derek has been brainwashed by a sect of tree-hugging neo-hippies intent on turning the planet saffron. Apparently, Derek will now pronounce love and peace and will promote the music of James Blunt and Enya as a global panacea.

On release, Derek will be offered trauma counselling and a refresher course on "Global Domination The Dalek Way".

Derek The Dalek Disappears...

Derek the Dalek....cuddly, really,

Sadly, we have to report the kidnapping of Derek, our office Dalek.

A local officer of the Judoon, attending the scene at Unit 6, concluded from the barely literate ransom notes that the snatch was committed by a human, probably a female, driven temporarily insane through stuffing thousands of leaflets into envelopes. She may have been assisted in the crime by disaffected members of The Creche, a sinister organisation of alleged web designers and administration workers.

Derek is thirty three and a third and a much-loved member of a superior species. His hobbies include; seeking, locating and exterminating, the colonisation of other planets, performing emergency temporal shifts and the taunting of envelope stuffers. He is of course much misunderstood and he works endlessly for world domination (surely, you mean peace? - ed)

A reward (virtual) is offered for information leading to the safe return of Derek.

Please contact: The Cult of Skaro, c/o Gateshead City Learning Centre. who will be pleased to scan your brain waves for useful data.

Westalls War - Radio Documentary

We've just added new audio content to the Westall's War website.

Recently, we were approached by a local media student Neil Reynolds, mastering in radio production, who kindly offered us access to a radio documentary he was producing on Robert Westall. Westall was the locally born author of the award-winning The Machine Gunners.

The documentary, Westall's Garmouth is now available on the above site for download as a podcast. It is an excellent piece of work and well worth a listen.

Lego Robotics Competition @ Heworth Grange

On Friday 19th October, teams from four Gateshead Primary schools took part in the grand final of a Lego Robotics Competition at Heworth Grange City Learning Centre. Under their team names “Rampaging Penguins” (Bill Quay), “Dunston Divas” (Dunston Hill), “Roman Bots” (Roman Road) and “The Geordies” (Glynwood), pupils designed programs to control robots through a series of challenging tasks. The competition had a soccer theme and robots had to weave in and out of defenders, beat the defence and score goals.

All teams performed well on the day. When scores were totalled up it was Roman Road school who emerged as winners. Dean, Lauren, Nathan and Caitlin picked up the top prize, a Logo Nxt Robotics kit while runners up were awarded Robosapiens Robots. All pupils received a gigabyte memory pen as a reward for their hard work.
