Modelling Year 1

I have been asked by a teacher if I can think of anything that will help deliver Unit 1A Introduction to Modelling. In the past My World was what everyone used for this unit especially as there was a direct reference to dressing a teddy.

Anyway why not look at 2simple software. This software takes really complex ideas and makes them "simple" the modelling bit is http://www.2simple.com/modelling/#

There is also Sherston who are always in touch with teacher and learner needs their website shows the modelling Kit from SEMERC. http://shop.sherston.

R-E-M also have My world 3 http://www.r-e-m.co.uk/rem/xrem.php?T=8384

There is also www.poissonrouge.com which has many different activities and is good for whiteboard use.

Lets get the idea of the comments facility working on this site, tell us about the software you have and how you use it by using the comments box attached to this post.
c'mon share what you do with others!

I would heartily recommend 2 Simple modelling toolkit. They take complex ideas and make them really simple. Dont forget that within the programme Control, Shift and O gives you access to teacher options. This allows you to change features within the programme.

Don't forget that part of Year One modelling objectives is to use a computer to create representations of various scenarios. This can be done with any painting package.

Also Greenwich Grid for Learning has a set of resources to accompany this and other QCA units. For this particular one they have a rather neat PowerPoint to allow children to get involved in the on screen adventure, Winnie Pooh and the Lost Honey using PowerPoint.

The Big Bus site has some great activities, including Dressing a Teddy, matching socks, My First Forty Five Words, etc.

Smart Learning also has an activity dressing three bears for different weather.
It also has an activity where children have to design a 'habitat' for a monster.

poisson rouge is great for lots of aspects of KS1/EY ICT. It keeps changing so there are always new things there. You can also use the gridref stuff you got on the NOF training - theres a dress the teddy game in there which you can import into kidpix or paint etc

Hi, does anyone know whether there are updated versions of Creative Writer and Kidpix compatible with the new Server? If not, can anyone suggest something as child friendly (and teacher friendly) to use instead? Thanks, Monica

Monica,

For Kidpix - Use Fresco from Black Cat which should be on the server or purchase something like Revelation Natural Art or 2Paint, all of which can be tailored to show progressive skills across KS1 and KS2.

For Creative Writer - Use Talk Write Away from Black Cat which should be on the server. Or better still have a look at some of the new ideas for literacy that are on ICT works such as Story Creator 2 or Photostory 3 which really engage children of all ages by combining writing, pictures, sound etc. Or purchase something like 2 Create or 2 Create a story which also allows children to write, draw, record and animate their work.

Hi Ian, Thanks for that, do they save into the children's folders or in to the programme?

Monica,

All of those bits of software allow the children to save their work into their folders. When the children click on save they should all goto their folders automatically with the exception of 2 Simple software which could need to be directed to the right place. ( You can use the teacher options for this by pressing ctrl, shift and O ) Hope this helps.
