Wilkinson's Tragedy Remembered

bquay.jpg

Over the past few days we've been running several sessions which have focused on the 1941 air raid disaster at Wilkinsons Lemonade Factory in North Shields.

Using text, archival materials and artifacts the children from Bill Quay and Windy Nook have explored the incident and have used Robert Westall's The Machine Gunners to understand the wider, Tyneside Blitz and Home Front context. The sessions have concluded with the creation of music soundtracks to Blitz footage (using Jam Trax) and comic strips promoting air raid awareness (Comic Life).

We also encouraged the class from Bill Quay to participate in some propaganda!

Kuzari at Gateshead CLC

We've just had a great Djembe master class at the CLC with Sam Maitland and Zozo Shuaibu from Kuzari. 120 children from St Philip Neri and St Mary and St Thomas Aquinas schools attended the morning and afternoon sessions.

Sam and Zozo gave each child a mini-drumming lesson, taught basic djembe drum language and then got the children even more active with songs, stories and games.

Look out for further whole-day sessions in November/December with Sam and Zozo.
