These are photographs of year 11 Resistant Materials coursework from the last few years. The pupils are from Mr Rix's class at St Thomas More school in Blaydon. Every product has some CADCAM input. The big items of furniture have been machined using the large Suregrave router at the CLC.

Student Showcase
CADCAM at the CLC (Extract from 'More News' July 2007).
This year GCSE students in Mr. Mullen’s year 11 Resistant Materials class have had the opportunity to visit the manufacturing suite at the Gateshead City Learning Centre. The CLC houses a variety of machines, including a Laser cutter, CNC router and stereo Lithography, 3-d printer. The students chose to design either a CD rack or a toy train, which they developed using CAD software (ProDESKTOP). They all made a prototype by hand in the workshop and then manufactured the final product using the CNC machines in the CLC.
Here are some comments made by the year 11 pupils from St Thomas More School:-
My train ended up being high quality because of CADCAM- James Radcliffe11B1
I found working with CADCAM exciting and enjoyable - Gavin Howard - 11T1
I thoroughly enjoyed working with ProDESKTOP, it helps to draw design ideas - Adam Davidson - 11T1
it was easy and quick to design and make using CADCAM - Sean Knox 11CL2
I really enjoyed working with CADCAM - Martyn Forsyth 11B2
CADCAM allowed me to make a better quality product than making by just hand - Daniel Crosby 11B2

This uses stereo lithography to create 3-d prototypes manufactured using a starch based powder. Drawings can be exported as stl files from Pro/DESKTOP and ArtCAM. It is ideal for rapid prototyping of A’level and key stage 4 designs, as well use by industry.
Useful for profile cutting a variety of materials using files drawn on Techsoft 2-d design as well as 3-dimensional routing from Pro/DESKTOP. Ideal for key stage 3,4 and sixth form.
Michael is a teacher of Design Technology at St Thomas More School in Blaydon where he has taught for twenty years. In recent years he has focussed upon GCSE Graphic Products, Resistant Materials, A Level Product Design and has been involved in working with the Gateshead Primary schools in CADCAM and computer control based projects. He is an accredited Pro/DESKTOP trainer.
