From 55 degrees North to 5 degrees South

From Gateshead to the Indian Ocean

I’m Johanna Smith, Jo to my friends. My day-to-day job at the moment is Regeneration Team Leader in the Economic Development Service of Gateshead Council.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my job, I have a brilliant team and together we get involved in some really interesting projects, a lot of which you’ll be very familiar with. All the changes you’ve seen at Gateshead Quays, the Baltic, The Millennium Bridge and The Sage Gateshead, my team had a hand in making them happen!

For the next 6 weeks (from the 6th October to the 19th November) I’m trading in my job as Regeneration Team Leader at Gateshead Council to take part in a Marine Conservation and Research Expedition in the Seychelles!

So add this site to your ‘favourites’ list and track my progress, getting regular updates from the field, find out if I’ve come face to face with a Whale Shark or if I’ve helped baby turtles find their way into the sea for the first time! Find out how the underwater survey work is going, mapping the coral reef, and what it’s like doing environmental education projects with the local children!
