BBC News School Report - Secondary School Opportunities

Gateshead City Learning Centre is once again acting as a hub venue and technical lead for Gateshead secondary schools participating in BBC News School Report 2010. Expect a hectic day of news gathering, interviews, presentations and technical know-how as Gateshead students report live to the world...all of which is tracked by, maybe even featured on bulletins by local and national BBC TV and Radio.

We're looking for small teams of journalists, reporters, interviewers and tech crew from each Gateshead secondary school to take part. There'll be 3 full days of rehearsals and snagging before the big day on March 11th 2010. No experience is needed as training and mentoring will be offered.

Find out how your school can become involved in this prestigious, national project by calling Mike Carter on 0191 460 2900.

CAD/CAM Scalextric Competition

Coming soon, an exciting opportunity to design, manufacture and race, a scalextric car. Pupils will use Pro/ENGINEER to design the vehicle and manufacture using a CNC router and vacuum former.

    ONLINE SAFETY WEEK

Today is the start of online safety week. This week we want to ensure that our young people make the best of using the Internet in a safe way. We believe the Internet is an amazing place for all people not just young people but young people especially should take care when contacting people via the internet. Communication skills are vital in the 21st Century and computers provide global access to people. Social Networking has really made its mark on our society and provides easy access to groups of like minded people but we must ensure our young people take precautions to safeguard themselves when online. A simple measure is to set privacy settings on their social networking site so that only known people can gain access to their group.
What other things can you do to keep safe online. Use the comments box to share your tips for safety online.

        BETT 2010

Just back from the annual tech-fest that is BETT at London's Olympia. It's a task sorting the wheat from the chaff and by-passing the marquee suppliers...Some interesting products, conversations, possibilities....And in sorting my literature pile and Evernote folder, the following float to the top...Zu3D (easy animation), EduPics (images to enrich learning), Go-Robo (robot programming), gcsepod (podcasts for GCSE learning and revision), luminis 3D (digital signage), podium (podcasting now with video), and 2Create a Superstory (more engaging stuff from 2Simple)....and from the biggies, there's the awesome Adobe CS4
